Question: How do I show off some of my work in a video resume? Should I? -Jessica from Louisville
Great question Jessica, thank you! You certainly can and should use your video resumes as a way to talk about your past accomplishments and show off your work samples to employers when you can. Video resumes are a great way to give employers a deeper look into your qualifications and skills as a job seeker. You can easily talk about your work samples and accomplishments in a cover letter or paper resume, but showing them in a video resume is certainly another way to emphasize your personal work.
For one, talking about your past accomplishments and showing employers the work that you have done in the past is a great way to show them what you can bring to the table. You are showing them the great value you can bring to the company in a concrete way by easily displaying your work. Anyone can talk about what they have done, but to be able to actually show them what you have done speaks volumes. However, it may be easier in some industries to show off your work in video resumes than others.
For instance, if you are a graphic designer you can edit your video resume to show samples of your work. You can also show physical samples of your work in video resumes when applicable. If you are an architect, someone that works in crafts, an interior designer or other professions such as these it is very easy to show off work samples in your video resume.
On the other hand, if you are a writer or a PR professional you will have to talk about your samples rather than show them. The best course of action then is to direct employers to a URL where they can find your work samples and portfolio. You can’t read an article from a portfolio shown on a video resume, but you can certainly talk about how that work got you to where you are now. Then they can simply follow the URL and check out the samples for themselves. You can tell them the URL in the video resume and also edit the video so that the link shows up on the bottom of the frame. That way you are talking about your past accomplishments and giving them easy access to the place where they can find and view them.
Talking about and showing employers your past work samples and accomplishments are a great benefit of video resumes. Be sure to take advantage of it and do it whenever you can!
