Spark a Conversation: Am I Willing to Relocate?

Here at Spark Hire, we want to help candidates find their dream jobs using the power of online video. We get a lot of questions from readers about how to use online video in their search for a great job. These posts will address those questions about how to find success in your job search.

Question: How can I stress in my video interview how willing I am to relocate? What can I say to convince companies in the video interview that I’m ready to pack up and move for this job opportunity? – Jess from Ohio

Great question, Jess! Many companies are reticent to commit to candidates who live far away because they are afraid that when push comes to shove, the candidate will back out instead of moving (or get homesick quickly after starting work).

This isn’t an unreasonable concern, but if you’re willing and excited to tackle a new adventure, there are plenty of ways to get this across in the hiring process. Here are a few ways to stress your willingness to relocate in the video interview:

Research the Area
One of the best ways to show a company how willing you are to relocate in the video interview is to roll up your shirt sleeves and do a little research. If you go on and on in your video interview about how excited you are to relocate and then don’t know anything about the area you’d be moving to, this won’t look good. Employers will think you aren’t truly serious about uprooting your life if you don’t know anything about the area. Instead, do some digging and find out about the great things that come along with living in this new geographic region — and work your new found knowledge into the video interview responses.

Be Passionate
If you want to pick up and relocate from your town, you’re probably pretty passionate about the company or industry sector. Don’t hide this passion in the video interview — put it on display! Stress to hiring managers in your video interview what you love about the company and the industry. Don’t be disingenuous; instead, let your excitement shine through.

Stress How It Fits Into Your Career Path
The best thing you can do to show employers just how serious you really are about the opportunity is to put it in the context of your overall career path. No one is going to believe you’re excited to relocate for a job outside your interests.

If you’re starting out in a new industry, let employers know how the company will help you achieve your goals. Don’t be afraid to use the video interview to show hiring managers a glimpse of the exciting future you see for yourself at the company.
