Spark A Conversation: Video Resume Staging

Here at Spark Hire, we want to help candidates find their dream jobs using the power of online video. We get a lot of questions from readers about how to use online video in their search for a great job. These posts will address those questions about how to find success in your job search.

Question: How do I stage my video resume? – Sarah from Texas

Great question Sarah! Staging is vitally important in your video resume in order to show prospective employers you pay attention to details. Here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind when staging a job-winning video resume.

Keep it Clean: We don’t mean G-rated (although you should really do that anyway), but it’s important to keep your space tidy. If you’re telling an employer you are organized and detail-oriented and your background looks like it was hit by a twister, you’ve just undercut your message.

Lights, Camera, Action!: Lighting is vitally important for a good video resume. If you can’t be seen, you’re missing the actual point of a video resume. Don’t record in a room with poor lighting. If you notice during a test run your video is looking dark, set up a three-point lighting system with lamps so employers will be able to see you’re the best candidate for the job.

Dress to Impress: It’s obvious advice, but it’s important to dress for your video resume like you would dress for an in-person interview. Your clothes convey a clear message about your candidacy and your future professionalism. Take off the pajamas and put on a suit if you’re really serious about landing a great job.

Those are just a few helpful tips on how to stage your video resume to really impress employers in the hiring process. If you follow those basic tips you’ll be in a better position to hear the phone ring with an interview offer!
