An article from Philly.com highlights how difficult it is for 20-somethings in America to find a job. This past Thursday, the U.S. Census Bureau released figures showing that one in three young people, ages 20 to 29, were unemployed in 2010. On top of that, the census reports that the 20-somethings are worse off than any other age group. The national unemployment rate for the country is currently at 14.1 percent. However, in Philadelphia, the highest unemployment rate is 19.4 percent for young adults.
To top all of these grim statistics off, Carl Van Horn, director of the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University, claims that people who enter the workforce during times of high unemployment tend to earn less over their lifetimes than others, as employers tend to pay less. “Even when good times return, those workers never catch up.”
Can 20-somethings catch a break somewhere?
