Spark a Conversation: Mobile Video Resumes

Here at Spark Hire, we want to help candidates find their dream jobs using the power of online video. We get a lot of questions from readers about how to use online video in their search for a great job. These posts will address those questions about how to find success in your job search.

Question: How can I record a great video resume from my mobile device? -Leah from Dayton

Thanks for the question, Leah! The use of mobile devices in the job search is both a blessing and a curse, in a way. It’s so great that job seekers can now search and apply for jobs online. You have potential jobs at your fingertips- literally. With the Spark Hire mobile app you can also record your video resumes and one-way video interview answers all on your personal phone. It’s convenient, and in our opinion pretty awesome! However, just because you can record your video resume from your phone doesn’t mean that you should ignore the best practices that are meant to go with them.

This means that just because you can record your video resume from anywhere in the world, doesn’t mean you can sacrifice quality and professionalism. Anytime you are putting yourself in front of employers, you want to be sure you are showing them your best you. Therefore, you need to be sure you are dressed properly and putting yourself in an appropriate background. Just because you can record your video resume in the coffee shop on the corner doesn’t mean you should. You can use your phone, but make sure you are in a quiet, appropriate area to record like an office or your room. (Hint: bathrooms are not the best place to record your video resumes!)

Stay away from loud and hectic places to ensure that whoever is going to see your video resume can hear what you are saying in it. At the same time, be sure you are dressed appropriately. This shouldn’t be difficult seeing as though you will only see from your shoulders up- usually. Make sure you are wearing a professional top and that your hair looks neat and together. Think of what you would want to look like if you met this employer in person. Aside from these important things, remember all of the other video resume tips Spark Hire has given in the past.

Be professional and make sure you are in a quiet environment. Get to recording!
