If you’re feeling a little nervous before an interview for a healthcare position, know that you’re not the only one. An interview situation can be intimidating. But when you’re prepared and have some idea about what to expect, it can help you to feel more confident and eloquent. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you get ready for your interview:
Dress the part
While what you say to the hiring manager is important, how you look also plays a role in your chances of success. Interviewers want to see someone who looks professional and polished. If you come in looking like you just rolled out of bed, you’re telling the hiring manager that you’re not totally serious about the job. Put on a clean, well-pressed outfit. When in doubt, go for understated. This means no trendy accessories, crazy shoes, or hats. Also, take it easy on the perfume or cologne.
Don’t show up uninformed
You should always head into the conversation with some idea about the facility and the person conducting the interview. You don’t need to spend hours doing research, but you should have a good sense of what matters to that office. If they’ve achieved a major milestone or accomplishment recently, you should be able to touch on that during the discussion.
Bring your resume
Even if you sent your resume to the hiring manager ahead of time, print out and bring another copy for this person to review during the interview. The resume should be professional looking, easy to read, and recently updated. If you’re unsure how to write a resume, consider hiring a professional to do it for you. Your resume leaves a lasting impression, so you’ll want to make sure that it’s selling your skills and accomplishments accurately.
Be positive
This is a soft skill that’s highly important as you head out for job interviews. Employers want to know that you’re able to maintain a positive attitude each day at work, as this has a major impact on your colleagues and the patients you see. Emphasize this during the interview, and don’t forget to smile and give off relaxed, calm body language. People want to hire someone who is positive and pleasant, in addition to experienced.
