So we’ve talked about video resumes for journalists, marketers, customer service reps, and more. But I live in Washington, D.C. where it feels like every non-politician or political aide is a consultant. With that in mind, here are some reasons why consulting firms and people in the job search for consulting positions should utilize video resumes.
Consulting is a broad term, although in this instance we are choosing to focus on management consulting. Management consulting is basically helping businesses and organizations improve performance through re-organizational strategies and creating new plans. These jobs require a lot of interaction with clients, and often a good deal of travel. There’s an emphasis on new technology within the consulting world and a focus on staying ahead of competitors while cutting costs. Therefore, demonstrating to potential employers the ability to utilize technology with video resumes gives consultant job seekers a leg up in their consulting job search.
As we’ve discussed, video resumes allow your personality to come through more than in a traditional resume. In such a client-focused environment, your personality is critical to your ability to do your job effectively. Video resumes can speak volumes in your ability to be coherent and efficient, while effectively pitching an idea (or in this case yourself) to very important people (the employer or the client).
Additionally, video resumes show potential employers your ability to navigate technology. Technology, first and foremost, is a major client of the consulting world. Knowing and utilizing technology shows potential employers that you can be an asset in the field with minimal training. It also shows you know the body language cues, diction requirements, and much more that differ in video interviews and meetings versus the phone and in-person interaction. Those are all critical to the nature of consulting.
I can, and have, found ways to prove that video resumes are great in almost any job search. Don’t expect it to stop with management consulting, either! For management consulting, however, the importance of video resumes simply put is to show employers you have the knowledge and skill set needed to execute new technologies which will be cost effective to the company and its clients.
