Our generation loves to waste their time online. We study, work, shop, play games, watch TV, and chat with our friends- all online. If the Internet just decided to get up and walk away one day, we would be lost. And yes, in this analogy the Internet is a sentient being. For all the power we give the Internet, it might as well be. But we can discuss the pros and cons of AI and technological prowess some other time.
What our generation does not do enough of however is take the time to learn about the world around us. Our parents read the newspaper. You know, that thing that appears on your front porch every morning covered in dew and wrapped in a plastic bag. If you don’t like the paper, then you can still get all the news you want from the Internet since the vast majority of major news outlets are now online. For the most part, you don’t even need to pay for a subscription to access the good stuff. CNN, FOX, BBC, Google, etc. all have free news outlets. Facebook and Twitter do not count as credible news outlets.
Why does this matter? People expect you to be knowledgeable about what is happening in the world today. Whatever you read on BBC most likely won’t come up in a job interview, but it never hurts to generally know what is going on around the world. Employers also expect employees to keep up-to-date on the latest trends and happenings in their field. You also never know how a news story could inspire someone. It might give you a great idea that shows you are thinking outside the box which may just land you a spot on your boss’s good side.
Don’t like reading? There are other options out there like watching news clips or listening to podcasts. The radio is still around as well, so give it a listen. Most stations tend to blurb about news headlines or current topics between music blocks. Open your ears and your eyes to the world around you!
