How to Best Tackle Your Job Search

If you’re in the market for a new job and aren’t getting the response you were hoping for, it’s time to shake up your approach. While the tried and true methods can be effective, it’s often necessary to try something unconventional in order to stand out to a potential employer. Use some of these tips when you want to make your mark on the job market:

Be practical

While it’s important to pursue a job you’re passionate about, sometimes people become so focused on this passion that they limit themselves without even realizing it. You may end up falling in love with a career path that you had no idea you were interested in, so it’s important to consider a number of different options. By shutting yourself off and limiting your search, you could be missing out on your dream job. Use your passions to guide you, but be sure to keep an open mind as you hunt.

Do your research

While it’s great to use major job search sites in order to locate open opportunities, an effective job hunt requires plenty of research too. Instead of waiting to see a posting listed on one of these sites, compile a list of a few different companies you’d like to work for. Once you’ve done this, you can keep your eye on the company’s site, and can network with people who may be able to help you land that job you’ve had your eye on.

Don’t let your application get lost in the shuffle

If you’re sending your application to “[email protected]”, don’t be surprised if you don’t end up getting a call. In order to earn attention from a hiring manager, you need to make sure you’re not sending your resume out to sit in an inbox full of hundreds of other applications. Instead of submitting to a generic e-mail address, bypass this step and get it to a decision maker.

With Google, LinkedIn, and other tools, it’s easier than ever to find an e-mail address for the hiring manager at that organization. Write a carefully worded e-mail and send your materials directly to them in order to increase your chances of getting an interview.
