Transitioning From the Classroom to the Job Search

Graduating from college is a huge accomplishment, but the transition into the job market and job search can be difficult. Everything about the job market is new to recent graduates and can be overwhelming. Many don’t know where to start, but here at Spark Hire we can help make your transition from the classroom to the job market a whole lot easier. Given the recent advances in job hiring techniques such as video resumes and video interviews, finding a job is now easier and faster than ever.

Finding the right job straight after you graduate takes a lot of preparation. You want to make sure your resume is perfect and your interviewing skills are up to par. The job search is changing along with the advances in technology. People are no longer just using the traditional paper resume in their job search, but are also using video resumes and video interviews to help land their dream job.

When you utilize video resumes, you create a quick 60-second introduction of yourself and your skills for employers to see. This helps because it allows employers to see your personality and your skills beyond what is simply on your resume before they even met you in person. Use video resumes to your advantage by showing employers your personality and great work ethic. Talk about past accomplishments and experiences. It’s a great alternative to the traditional paper resume because you’re now more than just words on paper. You can bring all of the great things you wrote in your resume to life easily by creating a video resume. When you record one on Spark Hire, it’s quick and easy as well.

Video technology in the interview process is being used now by employers more than ever as well. This is useful for graduates that went to school out of state and are looking for a job back at home, or somewhere else. Even before you graduate you can start your job search and conducting video interviews from your campus dorm or apartment. This will give you a leg-up when you do graduate from school. Even if you don‘t land the jobs you interview for online, you’ll at least brush up on your video interviewing skills.

Aside from looking for jobs online, once you graduate you can also take advantage of the wide network of alumni at your school. Your career center on-campus can help you look for jobs and employers through their network. Finding a job through your alumni network already gives you an advantage as well because you already have something in common with the employers.

All of those internships and fellowships you did with employers over the summers were not done in vain. If you enjoyed your time there and have a good relationship with the employer, you can always start your job search off with and email or call to one of them. them to check up on any job openings they may have. Use your networking skills! If they don’t have any job openings in their office, ask if they know of anywhere else worth looking into.

Networking, using new job seeker tools like video resumes and video interviews, and preparation will go a long way. The right job is out there for you. All you have to do is take the time to search and apply for it. It can be hard to adjust to a job seeker mindset after college, but once you adjust you’ll have a job in no time!
